Hold Until Relieved, Gen, PG, SG-1

[info]princessofg posted some thoughts on Jack O'Neill that got me thinking. Post-series, both the post and the story have spoilers for SGU.

OMG, They Killed Science!

Just reposting a little commentfic that I wrote for the fabulous [info]abyssinia_4077 and [info]ultranos_fic, in the comments to their Meta for Red Sky: Ragnorak- Where Science Goes To Die. In keeping with my obsession for fixing canon, I concluded after reading their hilarious scientific critique of the episode that the things Sam says in the episode are so outrageous that Sam couldn't possibly have believed them. But if so, why would she say them? (*inserts tongue in cheek*)

Clearly, the real answer was very, very complicated: )

Stargate SG-1 fic, The Parting Glass, Gen

This is totally unbeta'd and rough around the edges, but I saw just saw the [info]redial_the_gate post on The First Ones, and couldn't resist the lemminglike urge to post my episode tag, which has languished on my hard drive, lo these many years. Fair warning, I'm quite likely to revise it when I get a round tuit.

Doh! My entry for the Gen-Fic Jack Alpha-bits ficathon. Late because I'm an idiot and forgot I signed up. Sorry, Fig. The other ficathon entries can be found here

Kheb: The Ways of Enlightenment (Part 1)

* TITLE: Kheb: The Ways of Enlightenment
* AUTHOR: Redbyrd
* EMAIL: redbyrd (at) mindspring (dot) com
* RATING: PG
* CATEGORY: drama, action
* SUMMARY: Teal'c was a practical man, and had thought his old master was as well. Kheb showed him a spiritual side of Bra'tac he hadn't expected.
* SPOILERS: Anything through S3 Maternal Instinct
* AUTHOR'S NOTE: Continuing in my trend of trying to look at episodes from alternative points of view. It struck me that Maternal Instinct could well have been a deeply meaningful episode for Teal'c. *Finally* completed and posted in honor of Gen Fic Day, and Teal'c Alphabet Soup And *huge* thanks to my extremely patient betas [info]aelfgyfu_mead and [info]aurora_novarum, who read multiple drafts and or on really short notice, and patiently pointed out not-Teal'c-like bits over and over until I (hopefully!) got it right.

O is for Odyssey, PG, Gen

This was written as an entry for [info]sg_fignewton's birthday ficathon for Abyssinia. The prompt was a letter of the alphabet, and “Defining Sam from A to Z” In 100-200 words. And it came out way too long, as I apparently cannot drabble. But Happy Birthday, [info]abyssinia4077, anyway!
* CATEGORY: missing scene
* SUMMARY: Sam waits for rescue at the Supergate after the battle with the Ori.
* SPOILERS: S10, Flesh and Blood
* WARNINGS: Extremely unbeta'd due to last-minute nature of the project.

Ficlet: Settling In, Gen, PG

Well, I can't *possibly* miss Gen Fic Day. Alas, I have no actual fic to post. But here's a little snippet (that was going nowhere in my WIP file) from between S8 and S9- Jack's settling in at the Pentagon, and his new assistant doesn't quite know what to make of him:
-------------------------------------------------------------
Devereaux sorted through the pile of new mail, well into another typical day at the Pentagon. It was the first day of her second week working for her new CO, General O'Neill, and she still wasn’t sure what to make of him. He seemed at first like a complete hardass, with a sarcastic comment for nearly every occasion, except that the sarcasm seemed as often directed at himself as anyone. He'd dismissed three assistants before her, and she took a perverse pride she'd already lasted longer than any of them. He was a workaholic, like every other senior officer in the place, but with a subtle difference that had taken several days for her to place. Where other officers seemed to spend as much time jockeying for position as anything else, this one was all business. The sixteen hour days he put in were all on Air Force business.

Fic: First Lessons, GEN, G

Okay, this was a commentfic! Just a two-minute commentfic I was going to post on my lunch hour. It's all [info]sg_fignewton's fault. That and my complete inability to drabble. *goes back to work muttering*

* TITLE: First Lessons
* AUTHOR: Redbyrd
* RATING: G
* CATEGORY: episode tag
* SUMMARY: Ry'ac learns some new things after receiving his primta—but is he taking them seriously enough?
* SPOILERS: S1 Bloodlines
* AUTHOR'S NOTE: For sg_fignewton, who said that Ry'ac was not a very distinct character to her.
* WARNINGS: None

Ficlet: Is That A Scroll in Your Toga, or Are You Just Happy to See Me?

Reposting an off-the-cuff comment-fic from [info]redial_the_gate. This is an episode epilogue for S1: Brief Candle, inspired by [info]kahlessa, who, on the subject of Jack, Daniel and Teal'c in togas said, "Fanficcers, please take note that this should happen post haste." So I posted it hastily. Oh, Gen, PG, I don't own them, the usual...

Fic: Time Out of Mind, GEN, PG13

So- back from vacation, and I'm still downloading pictures and stuff with which to spam you all.   I had a lovely time- a week in England with a side trip to Paris, and aside from the wicked sunburn I got bicycling out to Stonehenge it was all good.

In the meantime, how about kicking back and reading a little S2 SG-1 fic?  I know it's been a rough week for everyone- hopefully I can at least distract you guys a bit.   This is my last released zine fic.

* TITLE: Time Out of Mind
* RATING: PG
* CATEGORY: drama, action, hc
* SUMMARY: First they told him SG-1 was dead. Then Daniel had to watch them implant Jack with a Goa'uld. And as if that wasn't bad enough, he was reliving events he'd hoped never to remember, thanks to the memory device.
* SPOILERS: Out of Mind, Into the Fire
* DISCLAIMER:

*THANKS to my fantastic betas, Aelfgyfu and [info]aurora_novarum, as well as the story editor for Foundations- they all were amazing, and the story is much the better for it.

Okay, I'm hiding the notes under a cut so as to let people read first if they're so inclined.  )

And now for something completely different....

So I was chatting with  [info]aurora_novarum , and we were trying to work out some of the details of Sam's history with Jonas Hanson for my interminably delayed S1 series.   And I wound up sketching out a scenelet that took place at the start of their relationship, after they returned from Desert Storm.   At first I thought I had actually committed a drabble!  (I never drabble- I'm far too wordy.)  But alas, no, this ran too long.  And it doesn't fit with the S1 series either, but it did make a nice bookend with a teensy little tag for The First Commandment:

Fic: Travelers Return

And Eep! I was nearly so glazed I forgot what day it is was yesterday! Belated Happy Birthday, [info]aurora_novarum!

And here's the latest released zine fic, Travelers Return.

I keep coming back to the Serpent's Lair arc, and I'm not really sure why. Perhaps it's that it made a big impression when I first saw it- big enough to inspire me to write my first Stargate fic (and first fanfic in *years*). And perhaps it's that saving the world and surviving against unbelievable odds was still so bright-shiny-new in Stargate canon.

And of course I keep finding resonances in the storylines where the events of one episode illuminate others. Like many stories, this started with an idea at the intersection of canon ponderings. I wanted to do a different viewpoint of Serpent's Lair. Jack and Daniel have been done to death, and I couldn't think of anything new I could say there. And I kept wondering about Sam- when did Sam Carter of SG-1 become more important to her than Captain Carter of the USAF? It could have been Singularity- but that was more about Sam as a person. After thinking about it, I finally pegged Sam's watershed moment at the end of Season 1.

So this is a bit off the beaten path for me. Sam's viewpoint. First person. And *almost* a Christmas story. Huh. Next thing y'know, I'll write something with marshmellow animals. Wait. Aurora already did that...

Dang, and here I thought I had no profound thoughts today!

Not just one new fic! TWO new fics!

*Explosion of fireworks, cheering multitudes, bursts of confetti*

After a moderately sucky day, I blew off all the chores I should have done and dang well finished a fic! Whee! And then in between posting it to my site and running over to LJ to tell everyone about it, I was reminded of another teensy little episode tag I've been meaning to write for ages. So I stopped right there, wrote it, coded it and posted it. So there! (Take that, sucky day!)

The small fic is an episode tag for Avatar, called Victorious. Teal'c figures out why he had such trouble in the game. Warm fuzzies abound. Okay, keep in mind I was pretty tired by the time I wrote this (I may have sublimated a few desires of my own, here).

And the bigger one, is something I've had sitting around since I first saw Prototype. Lexa Doig did a great job in that episode, despite having relatively few actual lines. In fact in one pivotal scene, her face was very eloquent. I just had to write her view of the episode. Story title is Do No Harm

As always, these are GEN. Victorious is G, Do No Harm PG.

So- in other news, Real Life is still quite intrusive, and heaven knows when the next update will be. It's nothing bad- major house renovations, mostly, and work stuff, but it is time-consuming. So. Now I need to sign off and go get a little sleep. Five-thirty comes so danged early!

Zine Fics Allowed to Escape- News at Eleven

Happy June 1..

As promised, I'm posting the two released zine fics from last year,

Shades of Oannes, as you might guess from the title is a series of missing scenes and tag for Fire and Water. I'd read so many fics that had Daniel suffering in the aftermath of his experience with Nem. I thought that really the worst was over for Daniel once he got home. His friends, on the other hand.... I'm afraid Jack, Sam and Teal'c were traumatized in the writing of this fic, but it's okay, they get better.

And Rearranging Fate, which is a set of missing scenes for Point of View with (not a tag, that would be shorter!) with an AU novella tacked on the tail. This story really wanted to be a novel, and I bent it to my will with only the greatest of effort. It has already spawned a prequel (Fateful Endeavor), and there will probably be at least one other fic in this universe. Someday.

Anyway- I hope y'all enjoy these half as much as I did writing them.

Thursday, March 16th, 2006

Good heavens! March. Egad. I can't believe it was December when I last posted.

Well, in writing news, my zine submission (I think!) made the deadline. Title is "Time Out Of Mind", and it's a little POV piece for Into the Fire/Out of Mind. It completely bugged me that one of Daniel's 'flashbacks' in the show was a scene from Hathor when he wasn't actually present. It should have been Jack's flashback- it's the one where she turns him into a Jaffa. So I figured out a way to get Daniel into that scene offcamera. And then the other thing that bugged me is that he really doesn't have a lot to do.. so suppose there was something else going on. Like maybe Daniel really didn't remember a lot of what happened during Hathor, at least until a bunch of ersatz medical personnel hooked him up to a Tok'ra memory device..

Anyway, a certain amount of whumping ensues, all in line with canon of course.

I'll post zine information when I get to it. Web release will probably be June 2007. And then I need to figure out how to get my new computer to accept email. I've been reading via the web access, but my mail account is a dialup. I've got it dialing, acknowledging another computer on the other side, offering the secret handshake.. but it won't establish a connection. Sigh. Computers.

I am starting to feel a slight tug of gravity from the black hole of Real Life looming up ahead. I'll probably be dropping off the net and writing nothing between mid-April and mid-July. Should be back after that. And I'll see if I can't post *something* to the site before that happens.

New fic: Breaking New Ground

Just posted the latest fic effort >Breaking New Ground. If you'd like to see the story before the notes.. this is your chance.

As I mentioned in a previous post, this story has been around a while. I wrote the bulk of it in a few days early this year, and then it sat around mostly complete while I tried to figure out why I wasn't happy with it. Eventually, it came up in conversation with Aurora, and I asked her to beta it.

This turned out to be a brilliant decision on my part, because she made loads of useful suggestions (nearly all of which I took verbatim!). But I didn't work on the story again right away because I was trying to finish other things. So it's only this week that I've gone back, added a few scenes, rewritten a few scenes and given it a final polish.

While it's not exactly a *goal* of mine to write every point of view on the show, I do like enjoy taking a look at familiar events through different eyes. And I wanted to give Nyan some more depth, and a chance to react to things that were only sketched in on the show (aided by some excellent acting).

And there also were a lot of things I wanted to know about Bedrosia.. what was the government like? How about the society? How could the research academy of Nyan's description exist in a world with Riegar's security forces? So more than most of my fics, this was a purely SFnal worldbuilding exercise..trying to figure out something plausible that fit what we saw in the show.
