O is for Odyssey, PG, Gen
This was written as an entry for [info]sg_fignewton's birthday ficathon for Abyssinia. The prompt was a letter of the alphabet, and “Defining Sam from A to Z” In 100-200 words. And it came out way too long, as I apparently cannot drabble. But Happy Birthday, [info]abyssinia4077, anyway!

Hee! Very cool! And this:

Cam, I take back every mean thought I ever had, she thought. You are a very prince among pilots.

may be one of the few/only times I like Cameron Mitchell!

And this:

"Besides, General O'Neill won't authorize a memorial without a body. It's a rule."

*dies laughing*

I didn't know that about the Odyssey, and it's very cool that Sam did know it. And I kinda agree with Mitchell - who on Earth thought this was a good name for a ship! *g*

I must admit, the scene with bringing Sam into the X302 bay kind of annoyed me... I would have found it more realistic if Sam had landed and bounced/skidded/rolled- something like that. It would have made the difficulty of the task more realistic. But, that's the canon, so I worked with it.

And the memorial comment is a callback to a bit in an earlier fic (plus of course Threads- where Jack *doesn't* authorize a memorial when Daniel's missing... *g*).

And I had to read the Odyssey in school. It's actually a pretty good story, and worth the time if you have the urge to check out a classic. (I could never get into the Iliad, however...which fortunately wasn't required reading.) Anyway, I figure that either Sam had read it in school, and or she remembered Daniel commenting on it when the ship name is announced. (Mitchell totally did have to read it in school- and also read a lot of mythology in the hospital when he was recovering because he was bent on joining the SGC and figured it would be useful. In my universe, anyway!) Curiously, I'm kind of eh about canon!Mitchell, but have quite grown to like him in fanfic.

Three small corrections (from the OCD person on your flist), and then you can delete this comment:

First they had to avoid the Lucian's blowing them out of the sky from pique. They were no good to her if they didn't.
It should read "Lucians," no apostrophe. Society at large is trying very hard to corrupt us. Sometimes they get even me with those darned apostrophes. I got my sword out to slay excess apostrophes.

Near the end, a sentence ends "yawned. ." Yeah, it's just one extra period, but as long as I'm being OCD....

The link at the end of the story on your Mindspring site takes me to "Is that A Scroll in Your Toga" rather than here.

Now for the good stuff: I love it! I too was rather disturbed by how easily Sam was rescued and how things didn't look right. Great job with canon! You even worked in Kvetcher rather nicely!

I love how Sam keeps helping out, telling the Odyssey how badly the Lucian ship is damaged, even as she's running out of air. I love that she tells on Cam. Someone had to do it! Her thoughts as she waits sound very Carter-like: a mix of practical thoughts with concerns about her teammates. Nicely done, and if life hadn't been so crazy lately, I'd have gotten to it sooner.

Er.. gotta give credit to the writers on Kvasir- I lifted that dialogue straight from the episode. (I did have to check the transcript to be sure!)

In writing this I found several oddities in the episode- for example, as it's played out, it seems like the Lucians are transmitting on the same frequency used for suit radios! (I fixed it. It made *no* sense.) I did like Sam in this episode- the visual of her in the suit beside the gate for a ringside view of the battle was an excellent one, and she's out there for presumably 7.5-8 hours (that's how much air a standard suit holds). The stupid thing is that the current shuttle suits (designed for work in weightless environments only) weigh about 300 lbs...and yet we know from Message in a Bottle that they've had suits they could walk around in gravity in for about seven years! Canon, how do we struggle to reconcile you with reality, let me count the ways.... (There were lightweight suits for Apollo, but I don't know that they still have anything similar in active service.)
